Sidereal vs.
Tropical Astrology

Two ways of measuring the same sky, from different points of reference.

If you have ever wondered why your Vedic zodiac sign is different from
your Western zodiac sign, you are not alone. The answer is not that one
system is right and the other is wrong. They simply measure the heavens
from different reference points.

Explore the Difference ↓

01 · Begin with the sky

First, Let’s Look Up

Every day, the Sun, Moon, and planets appear to travel across a narrow
band of sky. Ancient astronomers carefully observed these movements
against the backdrop of the stars, discovering that they followed
remarkably consistent patterns.

Over generations, these observations became increasingly precise. And
as they did, one important question emerged:

What should serve as the fixed reference point for measuring those movements?

Everyone was observing the same sky.

The difference wasn’t what they observed.

It was what they chose as the point of reference.

Two Different Reference Systems

Both systems observe the same Sun, Moon, planets, and stars.
The distinction lies in what each system keeps fixed.

☀

Tropical Astrology

Measures the zodiac relative to Earth’s seasonal cycle.

  • Aries begins at the March equinox.
  • The signs remain anchored to the seasons.
  • Used by most modern Western astrologers.
☾

Sidereal Astrology

Measures planetary positions relative to the fixed-star zodiac.

  • Accounts for the gradual shift caused by precession.
  • Keeps the zodiac aligned with a stellar reference frame.
  • Used in Vedic astrology and some other traditions.

03 · The orange tree analogy

Imagine You’re in an Orchard

Imagine you’re standing in a large orchard with rows of orange trees
stretching into the distance.

“Start counting from the white fence.”

“No, start counting from the old oak tree.”

You’re both looking at the exact same orchard.

You’re both counting the exact same trees.

The only difference is the landmark you’re using as your starting point.

Astrology works much the same way. Both Tropical and Sidereal astrology
observe the same Sun, Moon, planets, and stars.

The difference isn’t what they’re measuring. It’s where they begin
measuring from.

Same orchard. Different reference points.

04 · The offset

Why Are the Signs Different?

The two zodiacs are currently offset by roughly 24 degrees.
That is why someone may have one Sun sign in the Tropical zodiac
and the previous sign in the Sidereal zodiac.

The exact offset used in sidereal calculations depends on the chosen
ayanamsha, the reference used to define the relationship
between the seasonal and stellar zodiacs.

05 · A very slow wobble

Why Do They Drift Apart?

Earth’s axis does not point in exactly the same direction forever.
It slowly traces a circle over thousands of years.

Because of this gradual movement, the March equinox shifts relative
to the background stars. Tropical astrology keeps Aries aligned with
the equinox, while Sidereal astrology keeps the zodiac aligned with
a stellar reference frame.

This slow shift is called the precession of the equinoxes.

06 · A respectful answer

Does That Mean One System Is Wrong?

No. They use different reference systems to describe the same sky.

Tropical astrology emphasizes the relationship between the zodiac
and Earth’s seasonal cycle. Sidereal astrology emphasizes the
zodiac’s relationship to a stellar reference frame.

Plants ’n Planets primarily uses the Sidereal zodiac because this
site is rooted in the Vedic astrological tradition.
